What They Are

The Patient Education Sheets are one-page documents intended to answer the most common questions someone has when they are first diagnosed.  They cover the basics of the conditions, the symptoms, diagnosis, surgery, and what to expect.  The information is in bullet fashion and is not intended to be comprehensive, but rather to give a good overview.

The links below are to Adobe Acrobat PDF files.  If you do not have Adobe Reader (or the latest version), you can get a free copy at www.adobe.com

Please send any comments or feedback on the Patient Education Sheets to editor@chiari-syringo-news.org

How To Use Them

The sheets can be used to educate anyone interested in learning more about the conditions, or to give medical professionals who are not familiar with CM/SM something they can look at.  You may email them or print them out and use them freely.  We do ask that  if you cut and paste a portion of the document for a different use, please acknowledge the source, including this web site address.

Distributing To Doctors

In the future we would like to distribute a number of the Patient Education Sheets to every neurosurgeon and neurologist (we need more funds to do this) so that they are available to patients when they are first diagnosed.  They are intended to give a person something they can take home during a difficult time and then guide them to this website for more information.

In the meantime, we are looking for volunteers to print out copies of these sheets and take them to doctor's offices.

If you're interested:

  • You can find a list of neurosurgeons near you at www.aans.org

  • You may want to call first, explain that you would like to drop off literature about Chiari and syringomyelia and ask when and if you can do just that and how many copies to bring.

  • Please be polite, some office may be more receptive than others.

  • Let us know how you do:  director@conquerchiari.org
